How do I get rid of my old sofa? It’s a question googled thousands of times a day, yet many still don’t have a definitive answer. It’s already hard enough saying goodbye to your sofa, with it being the heart of almost every home. But it’s even harder finding the right way to do it! With fines for improper waste disposal nearing £50,000, it’s essential that you do it properly.

Fortunately for you, we here at Clear It Waste are experts in all things ‘sofa removal’ and have crafted this helpful guide to helping you find the best way to dispose of your sofa, and as efficiently as possible!

Here are our top tips to dispose of your sofa:

1. Take your sofa to the tip

Not only is taking your sofa to the tip a great idea, it is also good for the environment too, with large portions of your sofa being separated and recycled upon being dropped off. However, it’s certainly not an easy option.

For a start, removing a sofa from your home tends to be a two-man job – and even still it can be pretty awkward. That’s before we have even got to transporting the sofa, which proves even more challenging considering most of us don’t have a big enough vehicle and 19% of us don’t have access to one at all. Even if you are fortunate enough to get hold of one, you might then have to travel out of your town to find a tip with availability.

Essentially, for some it’s a quick fix, but for others it’s far from.

2. Call the Council

Arranging a sofa removal with your local Council is also an option. Many local councils offer the service for a fee, dependent on the size and whereabouts of the sofa. Typically, this paid service costs between £20-£70. Since the service is merely a collection one, councils will still require that you remove the sofa from your property so that it can be collected from outside with greater ease. This is an important fact to consider when booking the service, particularly for those of us that are busy, live alone or elderly.

Aside from the cost attached, this is a popular service, so much so that demand often outweighs availability. Therefore, these services are difficult to secure when you initially require them – meaning your sofa could be collecting dust and hoarding space for quite some time!

3. Re-home your sofa

Then of course there is the option of re-homing your sofa by either selling or donating it. Often this can be done through social media marketplaces, to friends or through locally based charities such as the British Heart Foundation or Age UK.

This is certainly an attractive option to many since you can either make money or provide charity from doing so. It sounds like a win-win, right? However, there is a slight caveat. If convenience is important to you, this option is often more hassle than it’s worth.

Foremost, re-homing your sofa is reliant on you finding somewhere to re-home it – again, a process which can prove tedious and take time (often weeks!). Not only that, but charities are unable to accept sofas in a poor condition and without the necessary Fire Safety labels, whereas collection companies can accept sofas in all conditions and sizes. This is definitely a factor to bear in mind when deciding how to get rid of your old sofa!

4. Call in the professionals

Alternatively, you could hire sofa removal professionals to do the hard work for you. Their expertise means that you can rest assured that your sofa is disposed of responsibly and without hassle.

Contrary to all of the alternatives, if you decide to hire a professional to do the job for you, the process is often much quicker. In fact, many waste removal companies offer same day waste removal services at an affordable price.

So, how should you get rid of your sofa? Well, there are plenty of options available and which one you choose will depend on your needs! If you are happy to wait a while and have a few spare pairs of hands to help, then re-homing or organizing council collection might be great for you. However, if you value convenience, professionalism and your time and space, opting for a professional to get rid of your old sofa is likely to be your most favorable option.

Cash-in on your old electronics

Instead of recycling your old electronics, you may want to earn some extra money quickly by trading in your items in exchange for money or a voucher. There are a number of trade-in websites and shops, including CeX and Cash Converters, which can be found on most local high streets and in close proximity to main towns. Depending on where you go, companies accept a range of items including kitchen appliances (toasters, microwaves etc.), old laptops, desktop computers, games consoles and, most commonly, mobile phones.

If convenience isn’t that important to you, you can get significantly more for your old electronics by selling them yourself. You can do this by selling online via websites like eBay, Gumtree or Shpock, or even social media such as Facebook Marketplace, Instagram or Depop – this may even bag you some more cash in the bank as you’re cutting out the middleman.

If you want to sell your electronic device, you must ensure that all of your personal information is wiped to avoid your data getting into the hands of the wrong people. The last thing you need is someone stealing your details and committing fraud. As a result, to reset your old electronic devices read this article on how to get personal data off your devices.

– What if my old electronic device is broken?

Most trade-in companies tend to offer one price for a fully functioning device and another if it’s damaged but still meets certain criterion – this is usually significantly lower than a working item.
Therefore, if your phone is cracked, your laptop has given up the ghost or your Xbox is beyond repair, you can still earn some money from your old electronics. This is because used gadgets are often refurbished or broken down into small components and sold individually to be reused in other electronic items or recycled be created into a brand-new component.

However, if your old electronic device is not worth refurbishing or stripping, there are some companies that will help you to dispose of electronics in a safe and environmentally friendly way. At Clear It Waste, we are able to help you with your WEEE disposal.

How to recycle electronics

It is vital that you never throw old electronic gadgets away. Of course you can get rid of your old electronic devices, but never place them directly into your bin to be sent to landfill. By doing this, your old electronics may leak hazardous and toxic chemicals into the soil, thus contaminating the land. As a result, it is vital to dispose of electronics properly to ensure this doesn’t happen.

Recycling of WEEE (waste electrical and electronic equipment) is a specialist part of the waste and recycling industry. Therefore, to ensure that your old electronics are recycled responsibly, you should follow the WEEE guidelines carefully.

According to Gov.uk, televisions, laptops, tablets and mobile phones with screens must be disposed of carefully and safely. This is because some components inside the electronic items are hazardous – lead, mercury and other substances can leech from old monitors and circuit boards – which means you are putting potentially toxic materials into the ground which can negatively affect people’s health as well as wildlife too.

Some hazardous components can include the following:

Activated glass

Phosphors

CRT

Fluorescent backlight

Printed circuit boards containing nickel

Capacitors

Ni-Cd batteries for portable devices

– Which parts of a gadget can be recycled?

We think of electronics as holistic devices so we’re sometimes not aware of what they are comprised of. Around 80% of a phone is recyclable for instance, so even if you have spare parts lying around, chances are they can be recycled. Specifically, the following parts can be recycled:

Batteries – Most gadget batteries are made from Lithium Ion and are recycled in an oxygen-free mechanical process that separates it into its core elements of cobalt and lithium salt concrete, stainless steel, copper, aluminium and plastic.

Bezel – The bezel of a gadget refers to any metal, plastic or other materials covering the exterior that doesn’t include its glass screen. These can be very valuable to sell, but by recycling you are also doing your bit in helping to be eco-friendlier!

PCB boards (main boards) – These are the parts of electronics that look like a maze of wires and metal buttons, and they can be re-used if the materials are effectively extracted.

Memory chips – Any gadget with a memory chip has the potential to be valuable. When extracted, materials that can be yielded include mercury, lead, iron, silver and even gold.

– What is the process for recycling electronic components?

The method of recycling components varies for each local recycling plant, so it is important to speak to your local recycling centre to be sure. As a general rule of thumb, most places include the following:

Collection – Once you’ve agreed on a price for your old electronics or electronic components with the recycling company, you will then send them off.

Shredding – Your electronic devices and components are shredded into small pieces to allow for more precise separation its components.

Sorting and separating – A powerful magnet can separate any valuable metals from waste streams on a conveyor, allowing the useful materials to be reused/sold in the future.

To find out which European country produces the most e-waste per household, we utilised e-waste data from the Global E-Waste Statistics Partnership and household composition data from the United Nations to identify who produces the most e-waste on average per household each year.

We found that Norwegians are the biggest culprits in Europe when it comes to e-waste, as the average amount generated per household is 57kg annually.

The UK is in second position as British households are guilty of producing 55kg of e-waste per year.

Irish households produce an average of 52.4kg of e-waste every year and therefore are in third spot. Whilst in fourth place is Switzerland who generate 51.5kg of e-waste per household.

Other European countries whose households produce more than 45kg of e-waste include

Spain (49.4kg)

Netherlands (47.5kg)

Cyprus (47kg)

France (46.2kg)

Luxembourg (45.4kg)

The UK has officially become a top sponsor for recyclers and waste management services. Waste collection involves systematic segregation of various types of wastes and then disposing of them scientifically.

Here are some important facts you should know about waste collection and how it is being put to good use.

UK produces 22.9 million tonnes of domestic waste every year out of 290 million tonnes of overall waste. Other significant contributors are hospitals, medical research facilities, industries and marine installations, especially oil and gas sectors.

In the last 10 years, the volume of waste recycling has increased by over 300 percent.

Around 70 percent of the waste is used in Green Revolution movements and to fill wastelands.

By 2020, UK will become one of the few nations to achieve 50 percent success as far as recycling household wastes are concerned.

What’s good about recycling wastes?

Britain is following waste recycling program since 2003. Most of the recycling of waste is done by statutory authorities. Recycling of the commercial and industrial wastes is accounted largely by private companies.

Local authorities collect and recycle municipal waste as per the Household Waste Recycling Act, 2003. The recycling has ensured that wastes like glass, electronic items, plastics, metal cans, paper cardboards and clothing fabrics are economised for optimised use.

Waste recycling of jars, bottles, mirrors and shields cuts down CO2 emissions and saves energy. UK has 50,000 Bottle Banks to collect glass in any form. Recycled paper uses much lesser resources than what is required to manufacture raw paper. Still, a lot of improvements are to be made in domestic paper waste recycling.

Waste recycling saves energy, produces much lesser greenhouse gases and the finished goods are exported for use to the Third World countries.

All the homes in UK produce a tonne of waste together. From old newspapers to tin cans, kitchen waste and what not! There are so many items that are just simply discarded without caring for a second what it does to the environment. Rubbish clearance is important for every household but it is also important to remove waste responsibly.

Life can be easy if you have a garbage disposal system at home. But what if you don’t? What can you do to reduce the smell and the waste in your kitchen? Maybe you can use some of these tips to tackle the kitchen waste clearance problem.

Bin in Kitchen

Kitchen bins can get very messy and smelly if they are not handled the right way. However, you can control this problem by simply getting a tight lid dustbin. You can also get home a sensor bin if you are averse to touching the lid all the time. Pedal bins can do the trick too!

Buy a Recycling Bin

Nobody likes to go through the task of sorting waste. But you can get home a recycle bin and start separating items based on colour-coded bins.

You can buy multiple bins with different colours and sort the waste accordingly. If you don’t have enough room to accommodate several bins, you can also get the ones with a triple compartment. They are not only convenient but can also save you a lot of space.

Deodorise the bin

Kitchen waste clearance also entails that you clean them regularly so as to prevent the lingering smell. However, the best way to get rid of the stink is to use a bin deodoriser. This way you can keep your bin smelling clean and fresh, regardless of what you throw in it.

You may not know this but household clearance is your responsibility, at least for the local councils. It is your duty to hire a company that gets rid of your rubbish and then disposes of it responsibly. A bad company may dump your waste illegally that can land you into trouble if backtracked to you! To avoid going through this, it is better to hire a household waste removal company that is reliable and handles its job responsibly.

Here are some tips to make sure you hire the right people.

Ask them for their waste carrier license. These licenses are issued to these companies by the environment agency that gives them license to carry the waste. Without this license, they are not allowed to carry out the operation of waste collection and are breaking the law in doing so anyway.

Professional companies will also protect their staff and employees, as well as you! Ask them to show you if they have public liability insurance. A reputed house clearance company will always have one.

House clearance companies incur a lot of overhead costs such as tipping, fuel and labour. If the prices that they quote are too cheap, then perhaps it is. Who knows where they may be dumping your household waste, whether it’s an alley, a field or even on the side of the road. It is always better to ask for multiple quotes to make sure that the price difference is genuine.

Check the company’s reviews and reputation online on various platforms. Normally, a company with a good reputation will be happy to boast about its good reviews. So look deeply into it as it is the best way to judge the quality of service offered by a service provider.

Garbage disposal system may seem like a simple machine but what if it breaks down or experiences a problem? While you always have the option of calling a professional London waste clearance company, you can also use the following tips to tackle the problem on your own too!

Let us discuss some of the most common problems with a garbage disposal system and their solutions.

It stops working

If the disposal system stops to work, chances are that power has been cut off. Experts suggest that you should check the reset button under the disposal and press it. In most cases, this all the troubleshooting you need to get your system to start whirring again. If not, you always have the option to call a professional so that they can diagnose it properly and detect the source of the problem.

It is jammed

When you hear the humming sound on the motor but the disposal does not grind, is making a lot of noise or stops before you turn off the system, then look inside because your machine may be jammed. Do not operate the disposal system when it is clogged. Unplug the machine, cut off the power and then start the repair work.

You can free up the stuck garbage by pressing the reset button. You can also clear the garbage by using a broomstick. Just force it down against a blade and try rotating the impeller. Sometimes you may have to remove the disposal to clear the jam. In this case, it is better to call a London rubbish removal expert to help you with it.

It is leaking

Find the source of a leak and tighten the connection to stop it from leaking. You may also have to replace the drain gasket. If it is making too much noise, just check to ensure that nothing has entered the system that should not have.

Every now and then we change the office furniture due to a variety of reasons that leaves us with junk items such as furniture and equipment. If left unattended, these items land up in junkyards and increase the waste that reaches the landfill. You can either take help from waste removal companies to sort this out for you or use the following tips to dispose of the used furniture properly.

Create an inventory

Having clear information of the furniture you want to dispose of can save you and the rubbish removal vendors a lot of precious time. You can also minimise headaches and miscommunications caused due to poor planning. The best way to start is to use a standard spreadsheet to record the office inventory. Start building a list from there and later collate the data of the furniture that needs to be removed.

Prepare a plan of action

Having account of the used furniture is not enough. You also need to take vendor relations, safety on-site, budgets and other such factors that can affect the outcome of the overall project. Going into this unplanned can lead to waste of time and effort, logistical disruptions, landfill fines and fees, environmental hazard etc. Since most of these risks are connected with one another, they may be hard to avoid without proper processes.

Work with reliable vendors only

Once you have the stock of items that you want to dispose of from your office , the next most important step is to hire a waste removal company that is reliable and works in accordance with local laws. You can ask for recommendations and also validate the industry certification as a part of your due diligence. Once you have a list of vendors, you can ask for a quote.

The success of your project depends a lot on your vendor so choose carefully!
